Foxborough, Massachusetts — The New England Patriots are facing one of their most difficult preparation weeks since the beginning of the season after the team announced the injury status of 10 players ahead of their road matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Following their victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, the Patriots entered the Jacksonville game with improved confidence. However, a series of personnel issues has forced the coaching staff to quickly adjust their game plan.
The Patriots confirmed that two important defensive players will be unavailable for Sunday’s game. This represents a major loss for a defense preparing to face a Jaguars offense filled with explosive weapons.
Rookie linebacker Quintayvious Hutchins became the latest player placed on the injured reserve list. The Patriots’ seventh round NFL Draft selection was unable to participate in any practice sessions this week due to a knee injury.
According to reports, Hutchins is expected to miss at least four games. His absence significantly impacts New England’s linebacker depth and their ability to generate pressure against opposing quarterbacks.
Another major loss comes from Dre’Mont Jones, who has played an important role in the Patriots’ defensive system. Jones suffered a shoulder injury during the victory over Pittsburgh after chasing a loose football play.
Jones had been one of the Patriots’ most effective pass rushers early in the season. He led the team with six quarterback pressures in Week 1, making his absence against the Jaguars a major challenge for New England.

Beyond the two confirmed absences, the Patriots are still waiting for the final decision regarding two other important players, Craig Woodson and Eli Raridon.
Woodson is dealing with a shoulder issue and missed the first two practice sessions of the week. However, the young safety returned to limited practice on Friday, providing a positive sign regarding his availability.
If Woodson is unable to play, the Patriots defense will lose another important contributor at a time when Dell Pettus is also currently on injured reserve.
The situation surrounding Eli Raridon is even more concerning. The rookie tight end participated in only one limited practice session before missing the following two days completely because of a thigh injury.
Raridon is the only Patriots tight end to record a touchdown this season. If he is unavailable, Hunter Henry will be asked to take on a larger role in both receiving duties and offensive responsibilities.
On the positive side, the Patriots received encouraging news as cornerback Carlton Davis III returned to full participation throughout all three practice days. He is no longer listed with limitations and is ready to return after missing the victory over the Steelers.
Davis’ return carries major importance as New England continues to deal with limited depth on defense. The team will still be without AJ Brown, Mike Onwenu, Dell Pettus, and Harold Landry III.
Head coach Mike Vrabel understands the challenges facing the team and has demanded that every player be prepared to step into a larger role.
"Everyone is preparing to become a starter," Vrabel said when discussing the Patriots’ current personnel situation.
The challenge for New England becomes even greater because Jacksonville frequently uses two tight end formations, creating additional pressure on the Patriots’ ability to defend the middle of the field.
If Woodson is unable to play, the Patriots may need to adjust their defensive approach and reduce their use of multiple defensive back packages that they relied on during the first weeks of the season.
The duo of Elijah Ponder and rookie Gabe Jacas are expected to receive increased responsibility after both made an impact with a key interception and seven quarterback pressures in the game against Pittsburgh.
With both the Patriots and Jaguars holding identical 1 and 1 records, the matchup at EverBank Stadium could become an important test of New England’s roster depth.
Injuries have placed the Patriots in a red alert situation, but the team hopes their fighting spirit and ability to adapt will help them overcome this difficult stretch against Jacksonville.
